How To Care For Your Antique Crystal Glassware

You might be have some pieces of crystal glassware inherited from your grandmother. Or you might have obtained some if you are a collector and have accumulated some nice vases and glasses. It is also possible that you have a wonderful crystal chandelier in your dining room.

Displaying antique crystal glassware

It is always advised to display antique crystal in a dust-proof display case. It is to be kept away from sunlight and high humidity which might cause damage. There are glued components to many crystal pieces and these factors could cause the glue to deteriorate.

Using antique crystal glassware

Crystal glassware should be used with great care as it is delicate and valuable. These should be used only for very special occasions such as a romantic dinner for two, or maybe for a family get together as these crystal glassware pieces will add a special touch.

Care should be taken in what comes in contact with the pieces. Wax must be quality paraffin, beeswax candles or even soy wax could be used. The low quality waxes are not preferred as they become pretty difficult to remove. Always make sure that any liquids such as wine, juice or vinegar do not sit for long periods of time. Serving such liquids in these wonderful glasses is just fine but it is necessary to rinse them immediately.

Never use antique crystal glassware which has a powdery white outer coating which is caused by lead leaching out of the item. These glasses are not to be used for drinking. To be thoroughly cleaned requires a professional polishing as well as grinding which is necessary for removing any residue. Antique crystal glassware is very delicate, and must always be handled with care.

Cleaning antique crystal glassware

The first step is to remove all the dust by blowing it away with canned air. Always note that dust should not be wiped away as it might have tiny and fine particles that may cause scratching. The antique crystal glassware should be washed with soapy water using gentle dish soaps or even delicates laundry detergent. Never use any product that has ammonia or phosphates in it. It is also advised not to put the antique crystal glassware in a dishwasher as it might cause it to crack, chip or spot.

With proper care and use, you will be able to use your lovely antique crystal glassware on special occasions and still it will last for years. By cleaning it properly and being careful with it due to its delicate nature, it is possible you will be able to hand down your antique glassware for generations to come.
